Default Burner intermittant, igniter works
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: LG5801XMN2
Age: More than 10 years

Hello all !!! I really appreciate forums that help others.
I am a member of a Auto Tech. forum that has over 30
World Class Techs helping each other, so if you have any
questions about a GM vehicle - I'm really good on diesels - e-mail me
and I'd be glad to help ya out.

My question is: Why wont the gas burner come on all the time?

Symptoms: if sets for a hour - the gas burner comes on , but will
only dry for about 25 minutes - sometimes longer - sometimes
shorter. Have to let set for another hour before the burner comes back on.

Things checked: The igniter comes on about 5 seconds after power is turned on and it will burn brightly for about 12 seconds and then will shut off without lighting the gas burner.

There is a sensor on the outside of the burner shell that has continuity.
I by-passed it anyway - direct and had the same results as mentioned above.
The igniter wont come on at all if the wires are left open.. normal for sure.

I disconnected the main wire to the gas burner assy. and took a voltage reading
of 113 volts.

I guess ... I hate to guess... I leave that to the Pros.

Thanks in advance for any help, Cragar

I will be following replies to your thread. My Whirlpool model LGQ8858JQ1 will get hot when turned on but the gas will not stay lit for very long. Unit becomes cold but keeps tumbling. This happens in both timed and sensor mode. If I try to restart it right away, it will not get hot. If I wait for awhile (maybe an hour or so like yours) it will ignite.

Because I had success a decade ago by replacing a timing mechanism in a washing machine, I replaced the timing mechanism in the dryer but this did not solve the problem. I also had success some time ago replacing a glow-plug gas ignitor on a previous dryer, but I am not sure how to get at that part of the unit.

I have not been able to get at the bulkhead and cabinet portions of the unit to investigate all the heat sensors. It looks like a formidible job.

I'd like to help, I really would, your problem is usually an easy fix. In my state(Fla)
you cannot buy any gas parts, from a appliance parts house ,without a state certification. If I advised you, and you were burned, or your house burned down, someone would blame me. I hope you under stand. If you call a appl.tech his repair should last a long time
and he repairs these all time, especialy up north where they use a lot of natural gas. Bettyboop

Having a very similar problem with my Amana LGA30AW. Usually heats fine after it has been sitting for a while. Will usually do the first load OK. But the next load will tumble with no heat. The ignitor light up and I have replaced the thermo-disc sensor on the outside of the duct that reads the heat from the ignitor via the two hole in the duct but the problem still remains. The solenoids on the gas valve assembly are getting hot so it appears the solenoids are getting the signal to fire but it appears the valve(s) is(are) not opening. I am suspecting the gas valve assembly.

Does this sound similar? Is this the direction you were going?? Not sure!
