Default Bad smell coming from dryer
Brand: Roper
Model Number: rgx3514rq1
Age: 1 - 4 years

We have had this gas roper dryer for a little over a year and it just started making a weird smell that almost smells similar to lighter fluid; it is not the smell of natural gas. Any ideas on what could be causing this?

Are you sure that a little mouse or varmint, did not die in your dryer vent tube. It could be what you smell. Take the vent hose off the back, and take a look. If not take the front off, and take a look. If you need any further instruction, I can be reached at my web site at ApplianceEducator.com Tom

Ok bottom line, the is nothing in that dryer, to emit an odor. They are greaseless motors. So it has to be something from an outside sourse. It could be something stuck to the inside of the drum, did you inspect that. There really isn't much I can tell you then take the front off the dryer, and look around also. Don't know what to tell you Tom

Thanks for your help tom, it has helped me trouble shoot the problem. i have read on other posts that the fumes from staining or painting in the house could create a weird smell like the one i am experiencing. Is there any truth to that? I stained a bar i just built in my basement and my dryer is on the 2nd floor and i used the dryer the next day. If this is true? how long should i wait to use the dryer? and how can i get that lighter fluid smell out of my dryer?

What I would do is get a few old towels, and wet them , and then squeeze out them the best you can, and then get about three sheets of bounce, and let it run for an hour. That should do it. Tom ApplianceEducator.com

Are you sure that it not coming off your clothes

The smell will be much fainter on washed clothes
When you dry the item the more volatile components (the solvent) will evaporate off concentrating the smell. It will leave the less volatile components on the clothes.

Hold some white material that you have washed (like a shirt) up to a light to see if it has translucent spots.
