Default Wont Stop Draining
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: GSD4030z
Age: 5 - 10 years

My dishwasher appears to be running through the cycle (water comes in, sounds like the pump is running, turns off at end of cycle), but my dishes don't get clean and soap is left in the dispenser.

I noticed that water is running to the drain continuously, so there is no water in the dishwasher to clean the dishes.

Looking at the parts for this unit, I was there was a Check Valve and a Drain Solenoid valve, and I suspect one or the other is the problem.

Any idea which it is (or maybe something else completely?)

Thanks!

I was actually able to remove the bottom panels of the dishwasher and observe it as it ran. There is a solenoid that actuates a drain valve, and it was not returning to it's "non-drain" position after draining - so the drain solenoid needs replacement.

Unfortunately, the reason the solenoid had died and untimely death was a leaking o-ring at the drain valve shaft penetration into the pump. It may have been possible to replace the o-ring, but I think it would be difficult to keep the pump from leaking, so I am replacing the motor/pump assembly.

Still not sure what the check valve does...

Got the motor & pump assy today. Took about 20 minutes to install (had already removed the old one). I did not remove the unit from the counter - just removed the two bottom kick panels and replaced the assy in place.

Works like a champ!
