The dishwasher fills, but when it should start spraying it just makes a humming noise (instead of the whooshing sound that it used to make). If I open it at this stage it is full of suds and the sprayer arms are not turning. Water dribbles out of the spray arms. It drains fine.

I took off the sprayer arm and the housing, so that I can see the impeller. During the wash cycle, if I open the door I can see that the impeller is spinning enough to make a whirlpool. But wen I put it back together I still get no spraying.

It could be that the impeller shaft is cracked so it will not turn.

Remove the impeller and inspect it.
