i just moved into a rented home and dont know much about the dishwasher but, it leaks and their is build up of water in the bottom. how do i repair this?

it sounds as though the machine is not draining. Remove the stagnet water in the machine ( use a wet/dry shop vac if possible ) . Check the drain hose to make sure it is not restricted. Check the drain impeller to make sure it is not broken.
