Default Smelly dishwasher
Brand: KitchenAid
Model Number: Superba
Age: 1 - 4 years

Our dishwasher smells terrrible. It smells terrible all the time. A friend suggested removing and cleaning the screen and chopper thing. Is this very difficult? I checked the parts lists and it seems to me that your descriptions are much more complicated than I would estimate the job to be.

Before you take the dishwasher apart try running the dishwasher with a cup and a half to two cups of white vinegar. No dishes.

The light cycle will do.

If this does not help you may want to take it apart but if the dishwasher is cleaning the dishes there should be no reason to.

What kind of smell?

Have you removed the kick plate and checked underneath the unit?

What you might check is under your sink, the drain hose from the dishwasher will most likey go to your garbage disposal. If so, alot of times the hose goes straight down to the dishwasher, if so this could very well be your problem. What happens is the dirty water from the sink goes into the dishwasher, therefore, you get dirty water sitting in the bottom of the dishwasher, and that is what you smell. The fix would be, when the hose leaves the disposal you should have the hose go up first about twelve inches, and then down to the dishwasher. That will stop the water from the sink going into the dishwasher. Then slice up a whole lemon, and throw about three hand fulls of ice, down the disposal, and then turn on the cold water, and the disposal, and that will clean the disposal out. Also, add an air break if you can...This will guarantee no drain water will return to the dishwasher.
