Default Replace motor or pump and motor?
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: GU940SCGB2
Age: 1 - 4 years

The dishwasher fills, but does not run. It hums, then clicks. I found the service papers packed on the dishwasher and was able to determine the wash winding was open. My question - should I replace the motor only, or the pump and motor together? Any other parts needed - seals, etc...? thanks in advance.

It is like better to replace the pump and motor assembly.

If you replace the motor along you will still need a pump kit.

You should replace the pump to tub gasket.

here is a link to your dishwasher model GU940SCGB2.

Thanks for the help. I just placed my order for the complete motor and pump and the gasket.

I installed the new motor and pump assembly but that is apparently not the only thing wrong. Now the dishwasher fills, and the wash cycle runs about three seconds, then stops. I am thinking whatever is causing this is the same thing that caused the original motor to go bad. The original problem was the motor would not run at all. Double checked the old motor and it is definitely open on the main winding. Any ideas?

It sounds like a problem in the control.

Check the voltage at the control.

Here is a link to a service manual
Free Appliance Repair Forum - Downloads

Your unit is included other than the B2 at the end of the Model number
It has a fairly complete timing chart which should help isolate the fault

Although not shown on the schematic the motor may be thermally protected
Is it overly hot after the short run?

I would try a number of different cycle options to help diagnosing the unit
Will it run in rinse only?
