I have an older Maytag dishwasher. I do not think that the upper spray arm is working properly. Even spinning it by hand takes some effort. It looked like the holes were plugged with calcification which was cleaned out with The Works. However, I still don't think it's working right as the glasses on the top shelf and all stainless steel items come out with a film. Can I remove the spray arm and clean it better? If so, how do I get it off? Considering the age, should I just replace it? Will that solve the problem of residual film? Jet dry has not done the trick, but washing the glasses by hand in vinegar removes the film. Please help.

Is the jet dry dispensing?

When was the last time you filled the jet dry dispenser?

If you have changed the detergent that you use try decreasing the amount that you use.

Thanks for the reply. I have used the type of Jet Dry that hangs in the little basket. It has been used up. I switched from Aldi's brand of detergent to Cascade and the problem got worse, so I went back to the other brand. I only fill the detergent compartment halfway as it is - any less and I think I should be washing by hand, but I will try using less and see what happens. Whenever I check, the sprayer arm always looks like it is in the exact same position as when it started which leads me to think that it isn't even moving. However, all of the dishes on the top rack come out clean, but there is still a film throughout. If I may ask, which is considered the best brand of dishwashing detergent? I should also mention that I do not have a water softener, but I have lived here for over thirty years and never had this problem before.

Check your spray arm by pointing it in the center of the rack facing the door.

When the dishwasher is fill with water and washing open the door and see if the spray arm has moved.

If it has not moved you have a problem with the spray arm.

Try using the jet dry again.

In may opinion one detergent is no better than another.

The spray arm did not move on two attempts to check it. Do I need to replace it? If so, and I order a new one, does it come with instructions? I'm trying to avoid a service call.

Before you order a new spray arm remove the old one.

You may find there is a build up on the clip and nut.

To remove the spray arm turn the nut that is above the spray arm counter clock wise.

If it is hard to move take something blunt and give it a tap.

Be careful not to damage the tub.
