Default Motor shaft coupling slipping
Brand: Frigidaire
Model Number: FDB635RFR4
Age: 5 - 10 years

Dishwasher started making a whining noise. Found a piece of glass had wedged in the food grinder and stopped it from turning, but the motor continued to run.

On the metal motor shaft is a nylon sleeve which goes through the seals, pump housing, food grinder, and finally, the impeller. The outside of the sleeve is shaped so the food grinder wheel and the impeller are coupled to it.

The outside of the metal shaft has splines. The inside of the sleeve USED to have splines, but they were worn away when the motor turned inside it. Now, the motor just spins inside the sleeve and can't effectively couple to the parts it is supposed to turn.

That part is not offered as a replacement.

Does anyone here know of an adhesive I might try to use to fuse the nylon sleeve back on the metal shaft?

The motor does have some play in the thrust and I don't know if it runs on it's magnetic center or some mechanical center, which may be why the sleeve originally had splines. I figure I'll assemble the whole works, using some sort of glue on the shaft, then set the motor thrust to approximate center -- if it makes any difference.

The main thing is going to be finding a glue that will bond the nylon to the metal. Any ideas???
THANKS,
Gregg

I've tried using a couple kinds of glue and they dont seem to last all that well at least in my experience. The most lasting fix that I've found is to replace the pump. They have re-designed it a couple times in the last couple of years and the newer ones are quieter, and havent seemed to come loose yet.

So, mine isn't the first machine this has happened to, eh? I looked for other posts about it before I wrote mine.

Thanks, Kiknads, for your comments.

I just hate to pay $150 (parts and shipping) to repair an eight year old machine that cost about $300 -- especially when the motor and the rest of the pump are serviceable, other than the stripped part that isn't offered.

I ordered a new impeller and O rings to try a repair. Have searched the internet for adhesives. One type was named but haven't found it in small quantities and locally available.

When the parts come, I'm going to try an epoxy. I won't hold my breath.

Any one else have suggestions?
