Default Maytag Dishwasher won't wash- makes humming sound
Brand: Please select
Model Number: DWU6812AAM
Age: 5 - 10 years

I have a Maytage dishwasher that just stopped working in the wash cycle. The basin fills with water, but when the cycle goes to wash, I hear a humming sound on the bottom right near the pump and nothing else happens. The timer will continue to time out. I pulled the covers off the motor impeller and examined it. There were no obstructions or debris. The impeller turns freely. My wife smelled burning when the problem first occurred.

Here is the link to your unit with a schematic
Maytag DWU6812AAM Parts List

Sounds like the motor is shot or something has jammed it
Will the motor armature turn easily
Get your meter out
Remove the connector to the motor and check for continuity through each winding from the Overload Protector
Also check the coil in the relay

I removed the convers to the pump and the motor armature seems to turn freely.

The motor makes a humming sound, but does not turn when power is applied. Motor seems to get pretty warm.

I jumpered power past the motor relay, so that doesn't seem to be the problem.

What is the location of the overload protector?

Thanks.

The overload is usually an internal part of the motor
Since the motor hums it is getting juice so the overload is OK
The overload is just a self resetting thermostat
Looks like either the timer is not connecting power to the wash or drain start windings or the appropriate winding is shot
You could turn the timer to a drain position and see. Will it drain?

When I moved the timer to the drain position, nothing happens. Also, when the issue first occurred, the soap dispenser cover did not open.

Could this be a possible timer issue?

The soap dispenser probably did not open because you did not get that far into the cycle

Could be a timer problem but sounds more like the motor is shot

Do you have a volt ohm meter?? It does not have to be a fancy one.
To go any further you will need one. Otherwise you are just guessing which part has failed.

What we know:
The motor is getting power. Is it the full 120 volts??
The start relay is not the problem, you shorted out the contacts and it made no difference.

What we do not know
Is there continuity through the drain and wash windings in the motor.
Is the timer giving power to the motor for wash / drain windings
If the the motor has blown the wash and drain windings was it caused by the start relay contacts being fused together and not opening once the motor reached operating speed.

You could try the motor test set up in the manual page 1-6
