Default Kenmore ultrawash not draining
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 665.15891792
Age: 5 - 10 years

Problem just occurred yesterday... water is not pumping out. Can hear the pump trying to work, but nothing happens.

Put it on Cancel/Drain to verify - hear the noise, no water pumping out. Opened the door quickly - no movement in the water at the bottom, so nothing is happening with the impeller.

Checked the drain hose - clear.

Decided to work down into the unit to see if anything is plugged.
- removed the spray arm and 'hood'
- removed the eight screws holding down the white 'cover' that redirects water into the feed up the back of the unit for the upper sprayer.

At this point, I still have the large round screen at the bottom and in the center is a black plastic circle (3" or so). The circle has a raised 'hex' shape in the center, with a bolt in the center of that. I assume this is the shaft leading into the motor.

I assume the area I need to check is under the screen (the impeller). However, I can't get anything off at this point.

Any help on disassembling this unit would be greatly appreciated!

ag,

Before you take the pump apart...is the motor just humming, but not turning during the drain cycle? If the impeller isn't jammed, and the hose is clear, I've seen cases where water got past the pump or motor shaft seals and dripped on the 4-pin motor connector, frying the lead to the "Drain" winding on the motor. Only takes a minute to pull off the kick panel and check that.

Thanks for the tip (I'll remember it for the *next* problem :-)

The most difficult part of figuring out this problem was not knowing if/how to get some parts apart. Once I found out that this one bolt that wouldn't turn *should* turn, and which way to turn it, I was able to get the impeller out. Turns out the shaft of the impeller that hugs the motor shaft had pretty much disintegrated. I pulled the impeller off the shaft and took a good look at it - Saw some cracks - grasped the shaft and it fell apart.

Yeah, that would do it :-)

Between the cost to replace that piece and a seal that goes along with it, and to replace the thermistor (which I broke accidentally when fiddling around underneath), looking at $160.00 and *3 weeks* for parts.

We'll be buying the new machine today or tomorrow :-)

(Thanks for the help, though, much appreciated.)
