Default Kenmore dishwasher not working
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 665.16889000
Age: 5 - 10 years

This dishwasher started giving us problems about 6 months ago. Sears replaced the control board a couple of times and it works fine for a while. Since the second board (Whirlpool P/N 8564542 Rev.A) was installed about a week ago, we have used it about 5 times. Now the only thing that works is Cancel and Drain. The only other button that works is Air Dry. The light associated with the button comes on, but the dishwasher will not do anything else. No other buttons or lights work. I've read on other sites that the thermal fuse may be the problem, so I removed it and measured resistance on it. It reads 0.1 on the 200 scale, so I would assume it is not blown. But is that reading within specs? The Microtemp part number is 8269213 and I understand the replacement should be 8193762. Do you think I need to replace it? Any other ideas????

If the thermal fuse was bad the dishwasher would not have any function at all.

Does the dishwasher fill with water?

Here is a link to the parts of your dishwasher model 665.16889000.

When the technician replaced the board does he wear a grounding strap.

This would be a strap that goes from his wrist to a ground on the frame of the dishwasher.

If he did not wear one it could have damage the board.

Yes it would have worked for a short time and then failed.

Question

Sheila,

Thanks for responding. Since my last post, the dishwasher has started working. When it works, it works beautifully. However, just a minute ago, it went back into it's "dormant" state with just Cancel & Drain and Air Dry working. It will probably start working in the next few days. I'm just wondering if there is a voltage problem at certain times that will not allow the touchpad to operate properly. I read another post on some other website that talked about high voltage affecting the dishwasher. I took voltage readings between L1 (before thermal fuse) and neutral. It read 107 volts without the door lock engaged. However, it read 124 volts with the door lock engaged. But the keypad still does not work. Any other thoughts?

A high voltage would effect the operation it would likely take the control out.

A voltage between 115V and 130V it fine.

Is the part the technician replace the whole control panel or just the electronic control?

The part replaced was the board with the electrical components (twice). He had to unplug 4 cables to replace it. He also removed the thermal switch and used it with the new control boards. The dishwasher has been working the last few days, but we're not sure when it will go dormant again.

It sounds like there may be a loose connection somewhere.

If the control goes into it dormant stage call Sears and have them come back out.
