The manual doesn't answer if the Impeller is supposed to turn independently of screw. When I turn screw it just seems to turn the motor and won't loosen or tighten the screw itself. I don't know if the rubber waher under the srew is supposed to allow it to do that or prevent it from happening. Not sure if this part needs fixed or not.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Have never taken one apart but from what I can see it should not turn on the shaft.

The motor shaft looks keyed (2 flat sides) and so does the under side or the impeller.

You will have to stop the motor from rotating
I would put a screw driver in the under side of the motor using the fins on its cooling fan to lock the armature

Then undo the the bolt. Note depending on the rotation direction of the impeller this bolt may be a left hand thread so if counterclockwise does not work try clockwise.
You should not have to horse on it, you do not want to break the motor's cooling fins

Perhaps someone else has taken one apart

The WASH impeller IS keyed and will only turn if broken reguardless of how tight the screw is. In other words even without the screw in it shouldn't turn.

The WASH impeller is broken and needs replacement.

It's only about $5.00 to replace.

First, when you have disassembled the washer components down to the impeller component, start the dishwasher to determine the direction of rotation for the impeller. My Maytag MDB9100 impeller spins counter-clockwise; the impeller retaining bolt loosens in the same direction as rotation. I went to Harbor Freight and purchased a belt wrench kit for under $8 (large and small wrench included). Took the smaller belt wrench and easily removed the impeller with a small socket.

The impeller is keyed, ie. a flat on the motor drive shaft fits a flat on the impeller. With the bolt removed, you can easily turn the motor shaft by spinning the impeller. There should be no need to break the impeller to allow removal or access to the shaft flat, by using the belt wrench.

My vintage 2000 Maytag MDB9100 has a keyed impeller that fits into a flat on the motor drive shaft. The impeller and retaining screw or nut should turn together, as part of the shaft assembly. To determine the direction of removing the nut, turn on the dishwasher briefly and then open the door to expose the impeller as it spins-down. The nut was removed in the same rotation direction, using a belt wrench to hold the impeller stationary.
