Default GE Dishwasher Not Draining
Model Number: PDW7880J01ss
Age: 1 - 4 years

Hi There, my GE Profile dishwasher will not drain. The only other time time this happened, I removed the unit from the cabinetry and disassembled the pump drain assembly and found debris stopping the impeller from spinning and just cleared it and that fixed it. Now with the exact symptoms I went through the same process, Again I found debris and removed it but that did not fix it. I ensured all the hoses and the sink drain/disposal are clear by blowing air from an air compressor through but they were already clear. Also the Overflow float seems to work fine as well. In order to "test" the drain function after I cleared the debris, reassemble and then I press a wash cycle button, let it fill for a second then press the start/reset button to drain the water. The water then appropriately stops filling and then I hear a mechanical clicking noise (as with the previous instance) and no draining happens. I do not know much about diswashers but see they are pretty simple to service. I do not see any outward signs of problems such as burnt marks and I completely disassembled every single part underneath and looked for a visual problem or clogs but did not see any.

Is it possible that the pump drain assembly has burnt out from being jammed? This seems unlikely given the design seems to be built to handle this - it is a magnetic impeller unit which seems it was made to handle a jam up beint that it is magnetically run.
Please help.
Thank you,
-Jason

I have exact same problem. I checked the solonoid(the click-hum you hear for about 4 seconds), and the switch connected to it. Also checked the float-switch...inside front under the "overturned cup"looking thing. I direct wired the motor just to ensure it was working...don't know what else to do

For jkust.
Sounds like you have a warped flapper valve on the drain housing in the back of dishwasher. Another possibility is a bad valve inside the tub filter in the back.
For DrDon, you have a bad contol board.

For Appguy,

You most likely have solved my problem, but I need a pointer or two. I just replaced the complete drain-motor assembly. When I looked at rhe flapper valve, it was deterioating (Black "stuff" getting all over my fingers). I spoke to the local guy and he said that he had nevrer replaced one of these. He said to put it back in but be sure to leave the "joint" on the top. He also said there was no front or back. Just put it back in being sure the flap connector was on top. For the first time ever, the diswasher is not pumping all of the water out. What is the secret for puting the flap back in without warping it?

Thanks.

For HG, check your drain connection to the garbage disposal. If the drain hose is elevated above the disposal pipe, then you will not need the check flapper in the pump, just take it out, this is there to prevent disposal junk getting in the dishwasher.

Thank you for such a prompt reply.

I'll elevate the hose.

I removed the flapper valve and elevated the hose (after blowing through it and taking off other end to make sure there were no obstructions).

The dishwasher still leaves about 1/4 inch of water in bottom and flashes code C4. Reset button will not make Code 4 turn off. Turning off the machine and waiting 15 minutes will not turn off C4. Letting it run 15 minutes (in case it is on a timer) did not make C4 turn off. Turning off current at fuse box and waitiung 15 minutes did not make code C4 go off.

It just pumps and pumps, does not get all of the water out and will not get off of Code 4.

What should I do?

Thanks.

For H G Kraddock. If you have the screen in the back bottom of tub, you probably have a stuck valve in there, very common failure. Also I think there is another check valve in there on the output.

Hi Appguy,

I took the screen out - there was some small amount of trash back there. I cleaned it up. There was some type of screw out valve in the bottom behind the screen. I unscrewed it and cleaned that out also. Then I opened the cover to the sump pump. Cleaned it out, also. I then took towels and soaked up ALL of the water in the sump pump.

So, now we have everything cleaned out and absolutly no water left in the thing. Yet it's still giving me the C4 Code, which supposedly means there is too much water in the dishwasher. The pump is running, but there is nothing for it to pump out.

What in the world is going on?

Unplug power to this stupid computerized animal, then re-apply after a 1/2 hr.
