Default DW seems to function but HORRIBLE noise
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 17822000
Age: Please select

One of the wheels on the bottom of my Kenmore portable dishwasher was broken, so I turned the unit on its side to access the wheel (I know, brilliant idea.) The wheel is fine now, but the dishwasher now makes a horrible grinding noise whenever I try to start it or drain it.

How can I take it apart to see if something fell into the motor? I read that the fan could be loose, or a bearing could be going bad - how do I diagnose these issues?

Thanks for your time,
- Jessica

Laying the dishwasher on it side should not have done any thing to it to make it start making the noise.

There might have been a piece of glass or something laying off to the side and when you tip it over it found it way to the pump.

Take the spray arm off and remove the eight screw holding the housing on.

Remove the wash impeller. This is a normal right hand thread the trick is to hold the impeller to get it out.

Remove the four screw in the wash housing.

Work your way down to the drain impeller and remove any debris that you find.

There are two ball that are suppose to be there.

The drain impeller is likely seized on so don't try to take it off.

Reassembly in the reverse order and try running a cycle to see if the noise is gone.

Thanks for the reply

Would it be possible for you to describe in more detail how to remove the wash impeller? We've been stuck on that for weeks. We can't find a way to hold the impeller so the screw in the middle can be removed.

Thanks for your time,
- Jessica

On the impeller there is a big nut.

You will have to use channel lock pliers to hold the nut and then use a ratchet to loosen the screw so it can be removed.
