Default Draining during cycle
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: GSD3420Z00BB
Age: 5 - 10 years

Hey Guys,
Here's the problem...
When the wash cycle starts, water enters into the machine, the motor starts, but then the solenoid kicks in and drains the water. The cycle continues with only a little water left in the machine.
Any ideas would be very helpful.
Thanks a lot.

You have a weird one

Try it on different cycles re: Normal Wash, Light wash etc.
Shut off any options re: Temp Boost, Heat dry etc.
Do the panel lights operate correctly?

Do you have a wiring diagram, should be behind the kick plate

I haven't come across any wiring diagrams.
I have tried every possible combination for wash, heat, etc...
I have cleaned every part I could. After listening to the cycle and watching the solenoid, I tripped the locking mechanism and ran the machine with the door open and it was exactly as I described. The tub would fill, the motor would come on and the spray arm would begin to operate and then it would drain, leaving just a little water in the tub. The motor keeps running and acting as if nothing is wrong, but there is not enough water for the spray arm to actually work. So I tried adding a bucket of water to the tub, and the same thing happened, the solenoid opened and drained.
I am perplexed and feel like it is going to be one of those 'duh' situations.
Thanks for your help denman, I really appreciate it.

I was wondering, could it have anything to do with the valve and piston at the back of the machine?

It is a possibility

Take off the cover at the back and unscrew the valve assy so you can take a look at it

Just had another thought when I reread your second post
You did not say that the solenoid was activated by power, just that it closed.
If it is pulled down by power you can usually hear the solenoid piston being slammed home (a fairly loud clunk)

Unplug the solenoid and run the unit
If it does the same thing you have a mechanical problem not an electrical problem

Also make sure your solenoid spring is OK
Here is a link to the parts, click on the motor part number in the parts listing and you will get a better view. Your unit may only have one spring on it

I am off to the lake to get some snowmobiling in

Good Luck
