Once the dishwasher is turned on (it could be any cycle setting ie.normal, pot/pans, etc) it remains on. The last time I turned it on and went to work, eight hours later it was still on. I opened the dishwasher's panel to access the electornics to see if anything is burned there, but had no burnt smell. Any suges tions would be greatly appreciated

Was it still in the wash cycle?

It could be that the water temperature was not right and the heating element could be bad not allowing the water to heat up.

This could have happen after morning showers.
