Default Dishwasher pumps water out before washing
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: GSD4930X66WW
Age: More than 10 years

Here is what the diswasher is doing:

1.) It allows the water to come in at the start of the cycle as usual.

2.) It immediately pumps out all of the water.

3.) The motor runs as if it were washing the dishes, even though there is no water in it.

4.) After the normal wash time, it starts running the pump to pump out all of the non-existent water.

5.) After trying to pump out the “water” for a longer than usual time, it stops and flashes either C1 (Slow draining) or C2 (Drain is blocked). Remember, there is no water in it to pump out. It had no trouble pumping out the water when the WAS water in it I have tried all sorts of resets, including turning off the power at the fuse box. I cannot get it to resume normal functions. I cannot find any blockage in the machine or in the drain (based on how the water flows out of the sink).

I have read your instructions on "Testing a Dishwasher Drain Valve and Solenoid." I do not get any reading on the solenoid. In addition, I cannot get the Gate Arm to move. That may be because I don't know exactly how it is supposed to move. The spring might be holding it down tightly. I didn't want to put too puch pressue on it becaust I didn't want to break someting that wasn't broken.

1.) Do you have more advice on how to check the gate arm? 2.) Do you have instructions on replacing the gate arm?

Thank you.

Check the drain solenoid and linkages.

It sound like the drain is not closed.

Here is a link to your dishwasher model GSD4930X66WW.

Based on the multimeter test, the solenoid is shot. What I nedd to know is how do I checxk the drain to see if it is closing. I'm unable to move the gate arm manually. Is there some trick to doing it? (I am assuming that the gate arm is connected to whatever opens and closes the drain.)

Down is the drain spot for the dishwashers. If it is stuck there, you could try to push it up to detach it. If the arm moves you may be able to get away with just replacing the solenoid, but if the arm itself is stuck you will probably have to replace the whole pump.
