The spatula may have been a coincidence
Sounds like you are not getting any water
The washer arms are run by water pressure so if you are low on water the pump cannot generate pressure.
The most common causes are:
The water valve itself (either the screen in the valve is plugged or it is not opening)
The water level switch (float stuck in up position or switch is shot). The unit thinks the washer is already full of water so will not add more
The easiest to check is the float switch
Remove it's cover and make sure it is clean a operates easily
Remove the kick plate and make sure the switch is not stuck in the up position and operates correctly.
To troubleshoot much further it is best to have a volt/ohm meter
Just because a switch looks OK externally does not mean it is OK internally.
You can get a decent digital meter for under $20.00. You do not need fancy. It is nice if the leads are a couple of feet long. You can then check switches for continuity and actually see if parts are receiving power.
