Question Dishwasher not cleaning
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: GSD5940D01SS
Age: 5 - 10 years

I have a GE model GSD5940D01SS dishwasher that is not cleaning very well if at all.

Some of the soap from the holders is still there after every wash.

Not sure if it is related but it is not drying very well either.

Any ideas what might be causing this?

Here is a link to your parts breakdown
GE GSD5940D01SS

To check the dry, put the unit into dry or plate warm cycle and check that the heater is working. Be careful the element gets very hot. May not be drying that good because it is leaving too much water in the tub.

As to poor wash
Remove the spray arm and check the pump for debris
If you have an old style wash arm assembly (not one piece) make sure the little rubber flapper valve is OK.
Remove the sump cover and do the same
Remove the rear cover and check the valve (Item 564 in the Body Parts section)

Here is some additional help
GE dishwashers, not filling with water, not draining, test procedures, pump assembly, soap dispensor

Thanks. I have checked the water level and it is extremely low. Can you tell me what might be causing this (water inlet value?) and is this something I could repair myself? i.e. what is the level of difficulty?

The normal cause of low water level is a dirty filter screen in the water inlet valve.
This assumes nothing has changed with the plumbing/water pressure in the house.

Yes it is fairly easy to repair

Turn off the water supply
Remove the input and output hoses to the valve
Have a pan under the valve to catch the water.
I usually get a screw type hose clamp to replace the output side clamp the manufacturer uses, usually a spring type. Just don't trust these.
Remove the valve from the machine
Check the input side, you will see a screen filter. Clean it or replace the valve. Sometimes you have to take the valve apart to clean the screen properly.
Do not run without a screen, it prevents debris from holding the valve open which would cause a flood
Reassemble the unit.
Add a quart or so to the unit (dishwashers do not like running dry, can cause damage).
I would leave the valve loose for now and run it to check for proper operation.
I do this because some of them are a pain to attach to the frame.
Check the level after it has filled, emptied and refilled.
Once checked reattach the valve.

Could also be valve is not opening all the way.
