Default Detergent cup doesn't open
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: mdb4100aww
Age: 5 - 10 years

the dispenser cup door doesn't open.. I've opened the door panel and it appears there isn't enough spring tension to open the latch, although I can do it manually.. the cover isn't stuck w/detergent. How can I determine where exactly the problem is: the timer.. wax motor or spring?? nothing is obviously broken, at least to the naked eye, and I'm very inexperienced with appliance repairs but can't afford to get repair man, I think this is a fixable problem if I can figure it out. any help is appreciated! Also, there MAY be a wire disconnected.. when I pulled it apart (the door panel) I noticed that the WHITE wire is NOT plugged in (to the wax motor), and a BLUE one IS plugged in. did the white one come lose? was it ever hooked up in the first place? Is this maybe my problem?

Default try a new spring

might soung simple but put a new spring on the detergent cup. springs are cheap, so try that first.

I had the not enough tension problem. My cup will pop out at the hinge where I could replace the end of the spring which had slipped out of position.

I had a similar problem with my Kenmore. I saw a wire hanging loose when I pulled open the door panel, plugged the wire back in.. and, guess what, the door started opening!

So.... just plug in that loose wire... may have come loose because of vibrations!

Thank you for the advice, I plugged the wire in and will try a wash cycle today to see if that works. If not, I'll go for the new spring next.. wish me luck!
