Default Brand new diswasher won't drain
Brand: KitchenAid
Age: Less than 1 year

Hi all. I recently replaced our old dishwasher with a new KitchenAid. Unfortunately, I didn't open the dishwasher before installing it, so I didn't notice that they provided a brand new drain hose. So I'm working with the old one.

The old diswahser drained fine, but after hooking up the new one, I notice that a few inches of water remain at the bottom after the cycle is complete. I'm wondering if my drain hose is either too long, or not routed properly.

In the old set-up, the drain hose attached directly to the dishwasher, then ran up high under the sink, where I zippy-wrapped it to something under the sink to keep it high. I left a loop-de-loop in the segment of the hose leading from the washer to the zippy-wrap (to prevent backwash), and then from the zippy-wrap it went down to the garbage disposal (no air gap).

On the new dishwasher, there's a section of drain hose build into the side of the washer that runs up the side and back down (presumably to prevent backwash) and then this hose has a fitting for the segment that runs to the drain. I attached my old drain hose to this hose, so I'm thinking the length of hose now may be too long, and the loop-de-loop may be creating a problem.

Should I cut the drain hose shorter and remove the loop-de-loop, or might the D/W have come with a faulty pump?

No you should not.

The instructions for installing your dishwasher should be inside the dishwasher with the drain hose.

Alway's use the new drain hose that come with the new dishwasher.

Ok, so I took the drain hose apart where it connects to the garbage disposal, and happened to peek down inside it. What I saw was a big, white ball of calcification or something. Our town is on a municipal well system, and there are a lot of minerals in the water. I guess a big chunk broke loose inside the old hose and got caught.

So I chiseled it out and hooked it back up. It's now running through a cycle, so we'll see if it drains. I wish I'd have seen the new drain hose before I put the D/W in, because removing it now would be a huge amount of work (the D/W was "trapped" in by our new porcelain tile floor, so I had to disassemble much of the kitchen counter to get the old one out - took me two weeks to R&R the D/W).

Hope this works!!
