Default Amana pump cavitation
Brand: Amana
Model Number: ADB1200AWB
Age: 1 - 4 years

So I've been down past the impellor and removed the large filter screen assy. The fine mesh screening is prone to clogging especially lately after I've switched from gel detergent to powder. I'm puzzled on why that screen makes a difference anyway- return water passes around the whole assy. to get to the underside where it passes the chopper blade then up into the impellor before another time around right? Also, what water level should I see when I pop the door open mid-cycle?
Thanks much

Here is a link to your unit, includes a schematic
Maytag ADB1200AWB Parts List

In most washers the water level is just under the heater but not high enough to activate the float switch

If the wash is cavitating and it is not doing a decent job there is a good chance it is caused by the water level. Since you have already checked the unit's filters.

Just add some hot water to the unit after it fills, if the cavitation stops then odds are it is a water level problem.

Your water valve has a filter screen in it, this may be partially plugged.
To clean it properly you may have to take the valve apart
Do not run the unit without the screen It is there to prevent crud getting into the valve and holding it open which would result in a flood.

I noticed another clue here: The water level is higher with the first cycle fill than following fills!? I'll try and check the water valve filter.
Thanks for your help.
