Default 3rd time replacing D/W's Controller
Brand: Whirlpool
Age: 1 - 4 years

Prior to replacing the electronic controller (PS #731638) in my dishwasher for the
3rd time, I would like to find the cause for the failures. The dishwasher will light-up and fill but does not cycle when the controller has failed. The dishwasher runs fine with the new controller for a several months before it too quits working. I have confirmed a failed controller by re-installing and verifying the dishwasher stops cycling after it has filled.

The house wiring is current as it is part of a subdivision that is less than 10 years old. I do not see any trace of water entering into the controller cavity. Besides verifyng all electrical connections are secure and proper through to the breaker panel; I wonder what else could be damaging the controller?

I would do a search on the internet using the model number to see if a lot of others are having the same problem.
Your Model number would also be helpful on this forum
Take a look at the board on a couple sites, is it the same as yours? If a manufacturer is having problems quite often they will bring out a new revision and conveniently neglect telling anyone.

Could be a board that has design problems from day one. The board is switching relatively high current loads (motor and heater). These can cause spikes on the board and blow solid state devices. With proper design these spikes can be eliminated but that would cost the s couple extra dollars.

"Besides verifyng all electrical connections are secure and proper through to the breaker panel."
I assume from this part of your post that you have already done this.

Is your dishwasher on a separate line?

I didn't uncover any service bulletins or forum's discussing this type of problem. Checking the Whirlpool sight for M/N GU980SCGQ2 doesn't show a part number change for the electronic control module. The dishwasher is hardwired and the connections are tight in the j-box, wall box and breaker panel. The dishwasher is on its own 15A breaker.

I have installed the 3rd replacement and all is working fine for now.

Thanks for forwarding the download. I'll write again if I ever figure out the cause for the controller failures.
