Default Outside fan stops working
Brand: Other
Age: More than 10 years

My air conditioner stopped working about a month ago. I have had 3 people try to fix it. The first guy cleaned the coils, then it worked for 1 day then it stopped. The second guy replaced the motor, then it worked for 2 days then it stopped. The third guy cleaned the outside unit inside and out and got a bunch of dirt & grime out. That was yesterday and it worked all night long. Well when I got home today at 5pm it was hot as heck in he house and the AC was running but wasn't cooling. I looked at the unit outside and the fan was stopped and it smelled overheated. So I turned it off inside and it sat for about 30 minutes. then I turned it back on and it started spinning again. I turned it back off so it could cool off some more. Any ideas? The third guy said the compresser, starter and motor all looked fine. What else is there on an AC that could need fixing?

Change the motor it has what is called a hot spot. While cool the motor runs fine, however after running awhile this hot spot heats up and the motor stops. It also gives a smell of burning.

But we just got a new motor last week. Do you think it was defective?

Then they should replace it under warranty. Are you sure it was new. A lot of shaddy characters out there.
