Angry Help! A/C Stopped Cooling!
Brand: Other
Model Number: Rheem Classic Series RAKB Series
Age: 1 - 4 years

Hello -

I hope that someone might be able to help me identify our problem. About two days ago, I noticed that my air conditioner unit had stopped cooling. At first I thought that it might be running a bit warmer because it has been very hot here in Atlanta.

I have since noticed that my unit is not cooling at any time. The unit runs constantly and air blows from the vents, but the unit is not bringing the temperature down at all. I usually keep the thermostat set at about 73 degrees at night, but it is staying 79 or 80 degrees around the clock.

I turned everything off to listen to the unit and I noticed it would make a sound about every 60 - 90 seconds like something was trying to come on, but it would immediately shut itself down.

I walked out the condensing unit today (there is a condensing unit outside, and an air handler inside) and I noticed that the noise is coming from the condensing unit. When you are standing by the condensing unit itself, the noise sounds like a rattle, and it lasts only for about one second, but it definitely sounds like something is trying to turn itself on, but it is immediately shutting down.

I generally run the air with the fan set to teh ON position, and I think that the noise that I am hearing is the noise that I usually hear whenever the "cooling cycle" starts, as you can hear it if things are quiet. My concern is that whatever is supposed to be happening is trying to happen, but not.

Any insight would be greatly helpful.

Thank you

That is the compressor trying to start. Is the fan running on the condensing unit ?
If under five years compressor is covered under warranty.

Hello Iceman, thank you for your response. To answer your question, yes the fan is running on the condensing unit. I moved the fan to the Auto position, and while it did not come on right away, when I went back down to check on it, the fan was blowing, and the fan is also turning on the condensing unit.

I suspect at this point I should call the company that installed the unit? I would anticipate that they would be able to perform the replacement of the compressor if it is under warrenty. My home is a new build, and I closed in September of 2005, so the entire unit is under three years old.
