Default Fan motor turns freely by hand but won't start
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: ACQ249XR2
Age: Less than 1 year

My window a/c unit has problems similar to fulmermike's unit. The fan motor can be turned fairly freely by hand but when the start buttom is pushed on the remote the fans merely tries to run but can't. The compressor goes through its cycle but then kicks off when the fan does not run.

I have replaced the capacitor with a new one but it still will not start the fan.

How can I test the fan motor? I am reluctant to hook it direct to 110 current since it appears to be a variable speed motor.

I don't know if the fan motor is burnt out or the control panel needs to be replaced.

Any help would be appreciated.

If the unit is under a year old you should call for service so you don't void your warranty.

If it is out of warranty check the rating on the motor if it is 110 volt motor you can hook it up direct to see if it will run.

Here is a link to your air conditioner model ACQ249XR2.

Thank you Sheila,

The unit is not quite 2 years old and is under a 5 year purchaser's warranty. However, Whirlpool cannot find anyone in this area that will service a window unit. Even the place that I purchased the unit from (Lowes) does not have anyone that will service the unit. I risk breaking the (seemingly nonexistent) warranty by repairing it myself. And even if do attempt to repair it my skills are limited to fan motor or electronics board replacement.

I do appreciate your form and your input. Thanks again.

Vick
