Smile Fan Motor repair
Brand: Please select
Model Number: 5SME39HL
Age: Less than 1 year

Hello, I recently noticed that my fan motor would not turn on and was acting sluggish. I removed the motor to find that 1 of the 2 magnets had cracked. Would it be possible to find replacement magnets and repair the fan? Model 5SME39HL
HC38GE237. I would also like to find an alternate or substitute parts as I know their has to be interchangeable parts.

How about a model number for a start. You took your motor apart What magnet is cracked ?
Motors consist of a "Rotor" in a "Stator" (made up of a number of poles) which turns do to "Electromagnetism". As far as being sluggish, this is due to lack of lubrication.

Smile Fan Motor repair

The model number is on the side of the motor as 5SME39HL
It comes out of a Bryant 5 tom system. The magnets are on the rotor. They are not fixed glued fastened or other-wise. I can remove them easily. The manufacturer is Regal Beloit for GE. Their is a capacitor in the end which appears OK. No burn marks on the PC board. The motor started turning slowly then chattered but would not get up to speed and I am assuming that was because the magnet was busted. The stator appears of and free of defect or damage. The sluggishness may be because of the broken magnet. The broken magnet appears to be the only problem. I believe I can fix the motor if I could just get a replacement magnet. Any idea about an alternate part?

Forgot to add that the bearings are fine. The sluggishness is because of the broken magnet. After removal I can spin everything freely. The reason I opened the motor is that it is broken and covered under warranty. I have anew one on the way BUT If all I need is the magnet replaced then I will have a spare if the new motor ever fails. Hate to just throw things away!

Unfortunately the stator bars are not available unless you can find them at a motor re builder. These motors a relatively inexpensive, so not many get rebuilt.

Something new just happened. I took the motor apart to see if I might be able to fix or kind DIY a half hearted repair. I have a new one ordered and won't get here for 2 more weeks (back order) and the heat is getting to my wife. I glued the magnets back in place and now the motor runs at half speed and the PC board has an error message on it of 73 which refers to contactor fault. Any idea why this message would have come up? I will be replacing the entire unit before the fan motor gets here.

Why so long, most good A/C Contractors would have a replacement within one day. As for the pc board indicating a bad contactor, could be overheating due to slow fan.

Please give the model and serial # of the unit itself, as I will be better able to assist you.

I just put the new motor in today and it is starting to do the same thing with the board showing contactor fault. I looked at the contactor and it looked fine, looks like brand new.

Is it possible for a contactor to go bad and still appear new??? I just removed the one on my unit and it looks like it just came off the shelf.
