Hi,

You could have a bad start relay on the compressor.

Default Compressor having trouble

Hi, does anyone what to do when the compressor makes a lot of noise (loud buzzing noise) which sounds like it's trying to "kick-in?" It eventually (usually) does kick-in, and will start to cool, but it is sounding like REALLY bad... and I live in NYC and people on the street are complaining about the noise! Help. Thanks. (I have a Friedrich window unit/14,000 BTU.)

Also... I guess I'm wondering if it is worth it to have a "service call" to diagnose and/or repair the unit (service is expensive in NYC $60-100)... the window unit was purchased for about $500-600 (would be $700 to replace some model now.) Help.

Is this a 240 volt unit? If not, you might have a burnt wall socket, just check wall outlet voltage when compressor is trying to start.

LisaH, if its that noisy its usually the copressor. If compressor shot, get new unit. Mechinical noise usually indicate bearings shot, connecting rod broken and it does make racket. PL

Default still having probs w/compressor

Hi derekwickham, I'm still having the same compressor prob. I have a 12 amp unit and the electicity (dedicated line) is fine for those amps... but when I turn A/C on the compressor seems like it wants more "juice" (electricity) to kick-in. I don't know. The whole thing makes a such a large buzzing when it's trying to kick-in that I think it's just time to get a new one. Bummer.

Lisa, Derek, there is one thing you can try if you hear compressor motor humming but will not start. Most of those motors have capacitor starts. If the capacitor fails, the motor will hum but not start rotating. A last ditch effort would be to replace the capacitor and see if thats the problem. The capacitors are not too expensive. They usually do not fail but when they do, the symtoms you desciribe are what they exhibit. PL
