What's the best indoor aircondtioner to buy?

Trane by far..... having worked in the industry the our company was a Trane dealer. I don't say Trane because that's what we installed, far from it, I say trane because we recieved the fewest service calls and fewest complaints on these models. Don't buy a heat pump!!!!!, these do not work very well above the Mason Dixon line.

In my opinion. I agree that Trane/American Standard one in the same, is the best there is. But it is a little tuff on the wallet. Which ever brand you purchase will give you about 8 to 10 years of service. Don't expect to get more longevity out of Trane. I find Goodman is a fair brand for a fair price. They give a 10 year warranty on some models. Stay away from Janatrol, Comfortmaker & Grand Air. Carrier/ Bryant & Payne are also one in the same. Just Payne is less expensive branch of Carrier

gwr is correct. They are the same. Essentially any brand you buy is going to have its pros and cons.It's like asking what the best brand of car is. Opinions vary. Trane is a decent brand but a pain to work on and don't expect a long life span. Personally I'm a Lennox man but again opinions vary.
Some of the things you should look for are:
A Copeland scroll compressor (they rarely malfunction and typically have a 10 yr warranty)
At least 14 SEER ( this is an efficiency rating and will save you $$- the higher the SEER rating the better)
Be an informed consumer and shop around. Don't buy into gimmiks and "specials". Look for warranties and make sure you have it serviced by a professional technician at least once a year. Repairs are expensive so being proactive will save you a lot in the long run.

I have had real good luck with Sunpentown . I have bought 2 since I have lived in boston. I have not had a single problem with either one, in the past 4 years.
