Default AC & Anti Freeze
Brand: General Electric
Age: 5 - 10 years

Our AC broke down two summers ago we called the AC Repair Guy to check it out... he said it needs to be replaced but he can patch it for us to work for a little while so he added some kind of anti freeze to it and it worked ... not perfectly but enough to cool the place and near the end of the summer it shut back off but we didn't need it... then the next summer same thing and we called the people and another guy just pulled out a bottle of some sort of anti freeze and charged $200. My question is does anyone know what type of anti freeze they use and where you can get it... I'm thinking maybe I could save some money and do it myself... any suggestions?

It's probably R-22 refrigerant and no you won't beable to do it yourself unless you have some A/C experience. Sounds like you have a leak somewhere it the system and rather then trying to locate and repair the leak, those companies are just adding refrigerant. Inform the next company that you call, that you believe there is a leak in the sysyem and you would like them to locate and fix it rather then just adding refrigerant. It could kind of expensive, so you might want to consider replacing the whole system (indoor and outdoor units).

This is so true these so called tecks that just fill the system with refrigerant and take your money are actully breaking the law. Continual refrigerant venting is punishable by a $50K fine tell the teck to fix the system leak or take him into small claims court
